Living in an unjust city
Amsterdam has become a true 'Global City', where international investors play a major role and 'internationals' dominate the housing market. Where the 'War on Talent' attracts tens of thousands of new residents (students, expats, migrant workers) to the city every year, most of whom (need and/or want to) leave within a few years. Because of the enormous inflow and outflow of residents (90,000 would come in and 80,000 would leave in 2022), I call Amsterdam a Sorting Machine. My research looks at how this process works; who is coming in and who is leaving? Where will the new residents live and who will be displaced? Now the selection process is mainly a matter of money; my question is: how can that become more social, so that we become less like London and Paris and become a more just city?
