2025: Amsterdam is growing again?!​​

 

The first half of 2025 shows growth in Amsterdam's population that is roughly equal to the growth seen throughout 2024. The third quarter saw enormous growth in foreign establishments.

• Huge arrival stream from abroad, a record .. For the first time, the number of foreigners who settled in Amsterdam has exceeded 50,000, namely 50,447. While the inflow from abroad had fallen sharply in 2024 and amounted to around 40,000.

 

• The number of people moving from within the country was also high; over 41,000. Almost a record, only in 2023 this was higher .. • This means that for the first time in Amsterdam's existence the number of new inhabitants in 1 year has exceeded 90,000 .; more than 91,000 .. • More than 62,000 departures from Amsterdam to the rest of the Netherlands in 2025 have never been seen before; the highest number of departures was more than 55,000 in 2022.

 

• With just under 25,000 departures abroad (lag in 2023 and 2024 higher), the total number of departures has also reached a new record; over 87,000 ..

 

• In 2025 Amsterdam again had a positive settlement surplus; more people settled than left. About 4,500 people. In 2024 Amsterdam had a negative settlement surplus.

 

• Amsterdam 2025: the number of vestiges and departures beats all records.  The city is increasingly becoming a transit house, a city of comings and goings. A huge dynamic, but also very volatile ..

 

• The number of births is still decreasing; very little but steadily .. Because the number of deceased is quite stable, the birth surplus (births minus death) drops slightly: from 3,667 in 2024 to 3,562 in 2025.

 

• Growth in the number of inhabitants. Establishment surplus (approximately 4,500) and birth surplus (approximately 3,500) together lead to an increase in the number of inhabitants in 2025 of almost 8,000​
